Headphone / analog audio output

How it tests

Waits for the headphone jack control to report headphones, then beeps left and right quietly and asks for counts, then whether the speakers stayed quiet. While the headphones play, the speaker pin's state and the speaker switches are read for the evidence.

How it decides

Supported: the jack reported them, both counts right, and the speakers stayed quiet. Partial: the speakers played too, one side silent, or the jack never reported them. Failed: nothing heard, or no jack report 20 s after the tester says they're in.

How sure it is

The counts prove the headphones play; the question keeps a pass from hiding speakers that play too, the Cirrus codec bug.

On a real Mac

  • On a MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012): speaker pin output off, Auto-Mute on, the tester said quiet.

What could mislead it

  • Could pass when it shouldn'tThe tester says the speakers stayed quiet without listening for them; the pin state that would show it is evidence only.
